The screen is black. A woman’s voice cuts through. It’s Molly’s voice.
“Forward? Or Backward?”
A blinding white light floods the darkness. A pulsating heartbeat.
“Backward,” sighs Sherlock.
White noise stings as scenes are replayed backward. Sherlock and John running backward. John’s fist recoiling from Sherlock in the morgue. The christening, backward. The birth, backward. The plane glides into the air, tail first. Magnussen’s limp body jolts into standing position, Sherlock puts the gun back in John’s pocket. The flashdrive jumps from the fire, into John’s hand. The gun drops, the coin falls back into Mary’s fingers. Sherlock raises from Magnussen’s floor, the blood-stained shirt turns freshly white. Mary stands across from Sherlock, gun drawn.
oh no i was laughing and then i got to thinking like when they get married sherlock would absolutely want to inscribe the perfect thing on the inside of john’s ring and it would take him forever to decide what the perfect thing was and he would be so nervous like maybe john doesn’t remember? and then the day comes and they exchange rings and sherlock just hopes john remembers, he hopes john understands, and john sees the inscription and it says “here, use mine” and he smiles so wide sherlock is taken aback until he looks at his own ring and the inscription says “thank you”
What is funny about this though, is that Sherlock is trying to piss her off by talking about John’s string of women, but the only one Jeanette is jealous of is Sherlock.
sherlock looking longingly at john’s chair on the morning of the wedding at the beginning of the episode is informed enormously by the fact that we later find out that they almost hooked up in that exact spot
